Gingivitis Vs. Periodontitis

Gingivitis:

Considered as the mildest form of periodontal disease. It causes the gums to become red, swollen, and bleed easily. At this stage, usually there either little or no discomfort. The reason for gingivitis to develop often due to inadequate oral hygiene. Once gingivitis is diagnosed it is reversible by professional treatment and good oral homecare. There are other local and systemic factors that might contribute to gingivitis, which need to be assessed by your periodontist.

Periodontitis

When gums separates from the tooth and forms pockets.Untreated gingivitis can advance to periodontitis. With time, plaque can spread and grow below the gum line. The toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque irritate the gums and stimulate chronic inflammatory response in which the body in essence turn on itself, and the tissue and bone that support the teeth are broken down and destroyed. There are many different forms of periodontitis and that need to be evaluated by your periodontist.
